CROSS
We conceived of a table that would rotate 45° to change configuration. This turned it from a perfect square into a cross, so enabling us to decrease the perception of its dimensions. When there are few people the surface area of the table is reduced, bringing them closer together.
Project description
Cross is a table we made in 2004. It’s a self-produced prototype.
We had noticed a material that fascinated us which came out at the end of 2003: Coverflex, a “magic” plywood panel, milled on one side so it folds double, while the other side is veneered and gives a sensation of continuity and rigidity. The material was unusually flexible given for plywood.
We conceived of a table that would rotate 45° to change configuration. This turned it from a perfect square into a cross, so enabling us to decrease the perception of its dimensions. When there are few people the surface area of the table is reduced, bringing them closer together.
]The mechanism is simple. By rotating the table top, four slats at the corners of the supporting frame are alternately extended or recessed. When the slats are extended the table is square, when they are recessed it forms a cross.
In the cross shape it seats four and can be laid with place mats or strips of tablecloth forming a cross. In the square configuration it seats 8-12 and can be laid with a square tablecloth.
